Like every winter the beaches of Margate , Ramsgate and Broadstairs are graced with these slide holders. On the Thanet and Sandwich coastal finds facebook page they do have a cult following among the local beachcombers as the trend is now to post slides holders with an image of where they were found within the holder. as it stands today, Margate is the hotspot for such finds. These are a few images posted on the page by group members.

A J Ovendenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07145698477921862643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1573204733857001476.post-66164688334265439462017-09-26T01:45:00.000+02:002017-09-26T01:45:32.790+02:00Exotic driftwoods .On the Thanet coast where I live at certain times of the year in certain weather conditions there is an abundance of driftwood ashore. I do find it a strange phenomenon in as far as that in some cases the wood is of a tropical origin especially during the winter gale period. The origin is unclear but given the types of wood found I can only assume the origin has to be of a groyne or pier construction. Insofar as that some of the driftwoods found are Greenheart, Teak, Ekki and Iroko, woods renowned for their incredible strength and resilience in a marine environment. Logistically the larger pieces are impossible to retrieve given the size , the weight and location on the coast. However, there are many smaller pieces to be found that can be utilised.
The exotic driftwoods however do have limited uses given the time they have been in the sea and the way the wood has been weathered. I have found that selected pieces can be turned to create items with a stunning effect. I am not a wood turner so I tend to give selected pieces away for turning of which I have some of the items made. I have also made driftwood available for carving but I am waiting on the results. To add to the provenance of the driftwood found and the items made, I GPS each piece I find ashore at Sandwich Bay, Pegwell Bay and Ramsgate .
Everything is a learning curve and there is no manual as what to do with exoctic driftwood found ashore that have been in the sea for many decades. By trial and error I have worked out a system of grading and drying the driftwood woods that seems to work.
Of the more softer hardwoods found ashore there is also african mahogany used for boat building with walnut and oak used for both boat building and other uses. I do like the oak found ashore that has been in contact with a steel bolt that has rusted in the marine environment as the reaction with the oak has does cause the oak to ebonise. This makes the oak very attractive in the artistic sense. On another point in many cases oak and walnut have been attacked by worm making each piece unique.

I have posted examples from my wood wood archive of items found and made.
It was really down to the fact that I could not see the purpose of building up a private collection of cetacean specimen samples deriving from cetacean strandings along the Thanet coast. Only then to store my collection in boxes for me to see.
So after making enquiries with the Monkton Nature Reserve they agreed to take my entire collection for their Museum. The collection includes bone sample from the Sperm Whale stranding at Pegwell Bay March 2011. The Fin Whale stranding at Foreness Point Cliftonville (autumn 2015) including Baleen plates and bone samples from the many recent Porpoise strandings at Sandwich Bay. For good measure they even took the common seal bones I found in the Stour Estuary.
I am not sorry to see the collection go , in fact I am pleased because it is my contribution to recording the natural history and ecology of the Thanet coast something that underestimated.

Also I should mention they also accepted my entire collection of sea shells from the sandwich flats. That included wedge shells, necklace shells, spindle whelks, scallops and cowries.
So far since February this year not many items have come ashore from the site of the B17. The wings are now deteriorating to such a point that the outer skin just flakes away. Same applies to the corrugated inner wing panel, as that is also breaking away in the tide. This is now exposing the fuel pipes and tanks.

In January this year parts of the right stabiliser came ashore. I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time and was able to retrieve parts that had come ashore. Once the wreckage is ashore away from the wreck site I can legally take them as they are classed as surface wreckage as long as I take them to a museum of which I did. Fortunately I was able to take them direct to the RAF Manston history museum where they were conserved immediately. It has taken a bit of time, as the B17 parts are now on display at the RAF Manston History museum. To date I have lost count of what I have found from the B17 at Sandwich Bay, but please be rest assured as every single piece is now with the Manston Museum conserving the B17 legacy.
So anything that can be added to the history of the paddle steamers is always welcome, I am sure.
This summer at Margate there has been a remarkable amount of shards found around the Nayland rock area by group members of the Facebook Thanet and Sandwich coastal finds group. Among the finds have been paddle steamer shards bearing the motifs of the New Palace Steamers and General Steam Navigation Company that used the pier. The explanation for the finds is the effects of the longshore drift after the demolition of Margate pier in 1998. I have posted a few images from the group pages.
In recent years there has been a lot of active
beach-combing in the Thanet area
around Margate to Broadstairs, Ramsgate
and Sandwich. The finds have been astonishing , especially at Margate where
items originating from the Victorian and
Edwardian Thames paddle are often found with frequent occurrence. Beach-combing for historic items has now become a very popular pastime in the
area with many good finds being recorded.

On facebook , a group has now been set up by the Thanet beach-combing community dedicated to these finds from the coastal area. Some
group members have even built up large collections of beach-combed items.

The group is known on facebook as the Thanet and Sandwich coastal finds , the group is easy to join and
gives regular updates on coastal activity and finds from the southeast corner of the english coast.

Sealink cross channel ferries that operated from Dover ceased to be in 1984. The company may have been and gone but the legacy of marine debris that originates from the cross channel ferry trade still continues to haunt us. Over the past month or so three identical plastic items from over 32 years ago have appeared on the north Thanet coastline. Two were found at Margate and the other further along the coast at Grenham Bay Birchington . The origin being Sealink ferries.
Beach plastic is now opening another chapter in coastal history as items going back to the 1970's are now being reported as found. The finds may be interesting but they really do raise environmental concerns.
The ends of the ribs have suffered badly from the wood boring bivalve known as the Teredo worm (Teredo navalis). Occasionally wood from these wreck sites break away and are found ashore and many are good examples of Teredo worm infestation. This example of a oak rib I found a few months ago has now dried out and I have cut sections of if. It can be very decorative and does some natural artistic appeal.
As it stands to remove anything from the crash site is illegal unless you hold a MOD licence to do so. But as items break away the items are classed as surface wreckage and a licence is not required. However the MOD department that deals with military remains still need to be notified of any finds.
The most common and easily identifiable item to find ashore along the coast from Deal to Sandwich and Pegwell bay is pieces of corrugated inner wing panel. This gave the B17 its wing strength but after 73 years underwater, time is taking its toll. In the first photograph is an example of the starboard wing breaking up as the inner wing deteriorates exposing rubber fuel tanks.
This past year I have found pieces of inner wing panel the full length of Sandwich bay, in turn I have collected it and given it all to the RAF Manston History Museum for them to conserve and deal with.
The Thanet and Sandwich coast like any other coastal region has a natural life and death cycle of marine life. Evidence is not to far away and can be found mostly on the strandlines of over 22 miles of coastline. Dead carcasses ashore are not a uncommon find but from a natural history collectors point of view I would think the bones would more collectible.

Building a collection is easy but it is very time consuming walking miles of coastline. I have built up a small collection which to be honest I have come across by accident as I comb the beaches looking for shipwreck remains and evidence of.

This year (2016) the deaths of porpoises top the finds list followed by Gannets. I have also been lucky to come across common seal bones where the origins are from the local seal colony in the River Stour Estuary.

I have posted a few photographs of some of the finds I have in my collection.

Over this period the shingle beach changed from a series of stepped terraces of shingle to a steady slope. In these conditions the most diverse pieces of driftwood do come ashore.
Many of these timber remains are of a shipwreck origin and some are easily identifiable as such. On the 26th November two larger items came ashore. It is hard to link them to a specific shipwreck as there are many offshore wreck sites with the Goodwin Sands on the doorstep. Both items were oak and of a large construction.
In May this year a dead dolphin was ashore at Sandwich Bay this was recovered by the IZL , ref SW20 215. The largest casualty again are Harbour Porpoise deaths with five recorded or should I say parts of as predators like grey seals have been active in the area. These finds were recorded through the North East Kent Marine Protection Area project. I am the posting images I hold of the finds.
Parts are found over a wide area as the wings of the B17 break up. I have informed the MOD that parts are coming ashore. As the pieces are classed as surface wreckage I do not need a licence to collect them from the beach. However it does not mean I can keep them to build a private collection. With agreement with the MOD as I find the parts I take them to the RAF Manston History Museum. Given the fact that there are more than one crashed aircraft in the bay there is a possibility that some parts could be from another aircraft so they do need to authenticated by the Museum. The Museum are conserving the parts and will eventually have them on display.
I have set up a facebook group called Sandwich B17 G group that gives regular update on the finds and latest photographs feel free to join. In October this year the crash site took a battering in a storm and I have posted the latest photographs of the site. One again there were more pieces ashore and I even found some ammunition. In 1999 the engines were taken and in nacelle two a tyre can be seen and it is in very good condition.
For one I am tired of the plagiarism of recycled history and secondly I am fed up finding myself being shoved out on the margins of everything I get involved in. The straw that broke the camels back was trying to unravel the dire situation of Ramsgate art and artefacts in local government collections and Ramsgate overall.

So it is time to do my own thing and starting my own projects from blank discovering new finds and generating something new and interesting. The first step was to pick a new area of coastline.
My choice was Sandwich bay given its location to the Goodwins and Brake sands. As I do nothing in half measures I kitted my car out with all new equipment and treated myself to a GPS finder. I also created a list of new contacts so there is nothing I cannot handle.
My primary target is maritime history and to find anything from the 1600's to end of the Napoleonic wars, a difficult task but achievable.
During wintry weather it is not uncommon to find pieces of wooden shipwreck ashore that in most cases are like random pieces of a jig saw puzzle made of English Oak. To establish provenance is an impossibility but as artefacts of a particular era they are worth recording and if possible worth conserving.
A few weeks ago I came across this amazing piece of wreckage from a wooden sailing ship, it is unique in the fact that the bark of the tree is still intact making it a very old form of ship construction.
I have be given a date that its origin is from the 1600's, but I am no expert and I am still learning.
Attached are photographs of the find and I do welcome any opinion.
The crash site lay undisturbed until 1999 when two incidents took place that left the flying fortress looking like a demolished wreck. In April 1999 the site was looted with two engines stolen and items taken. This was followed by an excavation that removed more items leaving just the wings, two engines and part of the frame in the fuselage area.
Since 1999 the site has been covered and uncovered by sand on many occasions, often with just a lone propeller sticking out of the sand. During the winter of 2015/2016 the site was uncovered yet again but this time wreckage appeared on the foreshore as it is now evident the wings are breaking up. At first I was unaware where the wreckage was coming from until I became aware of the crash site. As soon as it became clear the wreckage was from the B17 I informed the Receiver of Wrecks and declared the items I found.
Since then I have been out to the sites a few times just taking photographs and building up a library of images. I am waiting on a decision on the items I have picked up off the shoreline and hopefully they should go into a museum locally.
For those interested here are some of the photographs taken of the site and some of the finds on the shoreline and inter tidal zone.

Found yesterday in Pegwell Bay Ramsgate (4/9/14). A message in a bottle cast adrift from the Cunard cruiser " Queen Victoria " in the North Sea on the 23rd August 2014. I have made contact with the person who cast the bottle adrift informing him that it took 12 days for his bottle to reach shore.
I found the bottle when looking for sea coal something I have been doing over the past few weeks around the Thanet coastline. The origin of the sea coal is unclear and I really have to put it down to flotsam and jetsam either from spillage or shipwreck. Below I have photographed some of the different grades I have picked up. Left is sub bituminous, middle six pieces are bituminous and on the right a piece of canal coal. Also I have picked up another lump of coal weighing over 14 kilo , the origin I believe is from a shipwreck.

I have been sorting through some of the 3,500 images I have on disc for an exhibition on coastal changes by the North East Kent European marine sites project. I am not sure if they would use any of them but I am sorting out a few anyway and the choice is theirs.
I came across this one of Palm Bay Cliftonville taken by Margate photographer George Philip Hoare in 1914. What I find interesting is the amount of sea weed ashore something that is unusual in any Cliftonville photograph during that era as everything was always kept to a certain standard.

Another George Hoare photograph of the cliffs at Clifftonville I suspect this one was taken from the Fort Steps before the Winter Gardens was built and the lower promenade that was in filled with the chalk dug out from the Winter Gardens construction.
I not sure if I have put this one up before, Botany Bay Broadstairs un dated. Provides a good record of cliff erosion when compared to a current day photograph of the area.

During the recent Fircroft school trip I was so amazed how fascinated everyone was when they came across an area of large pacific oyster shells, especially those shells that were conjoined. Something I admit I just take for granted when walking the beaches. I often think like with most things Thanet people from outside Thanet look at things more with an artistic eye than us locals. So judging by this photograph I can now see why. Each conjoined oyster is unique with a mixed range of colour and shape leaving them open to interpretation whether it be craft or plain natural.
Pacific oysters have now been on our shoreline in large numbers for over two decades and are now classed as an invasive species by Natural England. Locally there is a local expert on the subject and his name is Willie McKnight, his work can be accessed on the internet for further reading.
Thanet's pacific oysters originated from the spat from the outlet pipes of the North Kent oyster farms and against all odds have bedded down on the chalk reef around the Thanet coastline. In some areas of coast this has had very little impact but in some bays they have formed reefs that is out competing indigenous species. To date Natural England have culled around 75,000 oysters in critical areas in a bid to contain the species. Over the past few winters many of the shells from the cull have made their way ashore along with the batches of shell from the winter kill.
In the photograph are shells from the winter kill that had been bedded on a unstable base like soft chalk, flint or another shellfish. The rough winter sea has dislodged the mass of shell from the oyster reef and worked its way ashore providing winter feed for sea birds. The shells then break apart and become scattered and buried in the sand close to the strandline and eventually to breakdown naturally. These shells in the photgraph are a couple of years old and have been slightly stained by the natural mineral elements in the sand and I suppose they do have this appeal.
One of the reasons I believe is that the headland of coastline from Foreness Point to Kingsgate Bay that forms Botany Bay is completely natural. Gone are the concrete promenades that form the Thanet sea defence system leaving the area as nature intended with very little evidence of the twenty first century.
Off shore is where the water from the Thames Estuary , Southern North sea and the Northern end of the English channel merge. This leaves the entire shoreline open to all sorts of possibilities for the intrepid beachcomber when the wind blows directly on shore.
The shoreline is incredibly clean and on the right winds and tides many interesting finds can be found on both the high water and low water areas. There are three main types of fossils that can be found, being belemnites, sea urchins and the marble size fossilized sponges. Towards the Kingsgate Bay side of Botany bay the Micraster heart shape sea urchin can be found. I do not consciously look for fossils in the area as I collect the sea shells but when I do come across fossils I do pick them up. So I do know of their existence.
All the sea shells that are found are common to the south coast and they come directly off the chalk reef that surrounds the Thanet coastline. The area has to be one of the best for finding dog whelk, netted dog whelk and piddock sea shells. Then there are mussel shells, whelk, slipper limpet, common limpet, periwinkles, carpet shells taking the second ranking. Even though cockles, pacific oysters and razor fish shells are common to Thanet they are less prolific in the Botany Bay area giving them third ranking.
There is one observation I have made regarding Botany Bay sea shells and these are the shells of the common whelk. The whelk shells are bigger, thicker, heavier than those found elsewhere in the Thanet area and all bear the scars of a turbulent life. This suggests to me that the whelk has completed its live and death cycle and these whelks have not been harvested from deeper offshore and then dumped inshore after they have been picked like many of the whelk shells that litter the Margate and Ramsgate areas of the Thanet coastline.
In the Botany Bay area I have found small scallops shells, Baltic tellin, thin tellin, prickly cockle, sea urchins and sea potato sea urchin shells and these have been on rare occasions on favourable winds.A J Ovendenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07145698477921862643noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1573204733857001476.post-59419635613632967732014-04-04T20:45:00.004+02:002014-04-04T20:45:56.964+02:00The Thanet coast , after the surge and the coal dust deposits.

After the surge and the following gales during January and February patches of coal dust appeared along the Thanet coast, in some ares there were patches of larger fragments. I took home buckets of the stuff just to pick through it and get some idea of the make up. In the photograph below are some of the shell specimens found in the coal that predominately turned out to be European sea Cowries also in the photograph is a spiral shaped shell. The shell is known as a Wentletrap and is very unusual along the Thanet Coastline.
The coal in general is a mixture of everything most domestic coal and the origin is far and wide. However the pieces that are darker are fragments from the gas works coal and they are harder and do polish up well. This type of coal is often used to fake Whitby Jet.
Following an article in the Isle of Thanet Gazette on the archaeological digs at Minnis Bay conducted by Antoinette Powell Cotton I contacted the Powell Cotton Museum as they requested anyone with memories of the digging to come forward . I then met up with the archaeologist who is coordinating the research.
I received my brief and I went walking and bingo I came across this. It is a Iron age well listed as MED 39 and has been back filled after excavation with granite pegs. This photograph confirms its existence to the map and information they have.
Being archaeological sensitive sites I have no intention of disturbing them as my brief is to just re confirm their existence for modern data processing.A J Ovendenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07145698477921862643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1573204733857001476.post-24695978531234773682014-02-24T22:47:00.003+01:002014-02-24T22:49:17.326+01:00Margate in the 1930's in photographs.Sorting through a number of files I can across a small folder of miscellaneous photographs taken in Margate in the 1930's.

The effect of the recent tidal surge on Margate was nothing more than an exceptional high tide. In fact the sea defence system was not even challenged. Even the temporary sand barrier on Margate main sands put up by Thanet District Council even withstood the test, saving Marine Terrace from a costly clean up. Over the years and more so in the past decade the amount of sand on Margate main sands has increased. In my lifetime the beach has doubled in size and changed its shape on numerous occasions producing many beach combing finds. The recent tidal surge has reshaped shaped the beach again for the second time this year and from the high water mark to the low water areas the sand has leveled out. If it stays like this then the beach users in the summer are in for a treat. As for myself it is a bit of a disaster as all the historical sites are now re buried but it can wait as most of it has been there for centuries.

Not a lot came in with the tide during the surge except a few large lumps of sea coal that constantly roll around out there on the sea bed. There was also many sea shells that had been uncovered mostly Whelk , but I did find a tropical one, a small conch. The origin from this I know. Its origin came many years ago from a tourist shop in the Arlington Arcade Margate. The shop sold many tropical sea shells and was run by Terry Purser who was also a bit of a show man and knew how to pull of a publicity stunt. When he received a consignment of sea shells in from abroad a few of the crates somehow managed to get wet inside. This caused mildew in transit and the shells were not up to a retail standard. So discreetly, he arranged for the shells to be scattered on the low water mark on Margate main sands. Given a few tides people started to find tropical shells scattered around the main sands. The dicoveries made the national newspapers including the Sun and for years after that people actually believed that tropical sea shells could be found at Margate.A J Ovendenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07145698477921862643noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1573204733857001476.post-23038521461222681622013-11-24T17:10:00.000+01:002013-11-29T15:01:57.649+01:00New Palace Steamers in postcards

From the mid 1890's up until the outbreak of the First World
War two main paddle steamer companies and two railway companies competed to
transport people in their thousands to Margate . One of the companies New
Palace Steamers even produced their own souvenirs for the trip. I have now
accumulated a few postcards they produced.

On another point two years ago I found a piece of broken
plate on the main sands that has part of the same address seen on the bottom of
the postcards.

On some areas of the Margate main sands near the low water
mark I am now coming to the conclusion that most of the shards excluding
mineral water bottles that have been found are actually gash thrown over the
side by the Paddle Steamers that visited the jetty during that era. Also the
amount of finds that date after the time the paddle steamers stopped operating
the routes does decline significantly.
