Very interesting. I have often wondered about this as I have passed by. The whole area seems historical. The grounds at Westwood Lodge look like a little oasis.
The old Poorhole Lane entrance must be the drive in where the gates are on the A254 Ramsgate Road. This dog legs as shown on the 1778 map and comes out onto the current Poorhole Lane about a third the way along from the A254. The site of the plague pit seems to have a cottage and outbuildings around its edge. I'm using some O/S survey software which is very detailed.
Interestingly, Westwood Lodge was the home of the Herapath's. Their daughter Marion born 1850 married Linley Sambourne who was creator of the Punch Cartoon.The Herapath's and Linley are buried in St Peter's Churchyard.
so the old road was called poor old soul lane.. makes sense
