The Lido swimming pool Cliftonville.

In 1927 the Clifton Baths estate , Cliftonville built a fine swimming pool on the foreshore and in 1938 the entire complex and swimming pool was renamed the Lido. Below are four postcards spaning four decades of the Lido swimming pool.

This J.Salmon postcard to the left is a late 1920's view and note the name Clifton Bathing Pool.
The title of this postcard top right has changed to Cliftonville Bathing Pool and this postcard produced locally by A.H & S Margate from the "Paragon" series. A typical 1930's view and notice how the diving board has changed.
This monochrome postcard is a 1940/1950's view produced by Photo Prescision Ltd, St Albans. The post war photographic quality makes good downloading.
Finally below, this how many people remember the Lido swimming pool, a 1960's view with the pavillion on the end of Margate Pier visable, which was destroyed by fire in 1964.
Another feature is the French bar and the harp lager umbrellas. This postcard was locally produced by Elgate Postcards Ramsgate.

Fascinating stuff as always Tony (& I'm glad you didn't depress us all by including a photo of the way it is now!).

Actually Peter, I didn't want to depress myself.

Tony, is it just the swimming pool part (including the underground changing rooms etc) that is listed, or is it the entire building?

Peter, I am not sure. The only planning bit I do know, is that the chimney used for warming up the sea water was only permitted providing in lined up with Ethelbert Road therefore not obscuring anyones view.

hi if anyone is still interested, the pool and changing rooms are not listed, it is the remains of the clifton baths and all parts connected with the clifton baths that are listed.
I am leading a challenge to take control of the complex and refurbish her back into a entertainment complex, we are currently trying to get as many people interested as possible. We are also hopeful of holding a meeting in margate early this year to present our project plans.
