The Margate Civic society spring newsletter makes the announcement that there is a "Temporary reprieve for Margate Museum". It appears that TDC have decided to give the EKMT a one off payment of £20,000 for 2008/9 and no more after that. I am not sure whether EKMT has to produce accounts for the £20,000 but then that is a different story. The problem is how are the museums going to stay open, bearing mind they pay insurance on the TDC collection of around £8,000 and employ staff.
It does point to closure of at least one, but closing a museum is not like closing a carpet shop. It is not a matter of closing the doors and having a clearance sale. The Margate collection is valued at least £500,000 and I suspect the £20,000 is a payment to cover the winding down till the end of the summer season.
