Sunbeam photo collection

In the Margate Museum, Thanet District Council owns a huge collection of Sunbeam black and white photographs which runs into hundreds. This one of Palm Bay has been copied by permission of the Margate Museum. On Simon Moores Thanetlife.com there are some on the gallery of old photographs also copied with permission and well worth a look. Should the Margate Museum close it will be interesting to see what TDC will do with the Sunbeam collection. In some cases the black and white photography is stunning and is certainly an art form in its own right. Would you agree

Tony with Ramsgate library fire I learnt that none of these things are safe when kept in a museum and since the fire I have come to realise, producing my local publications that with many of these images a lot of inexpensive copies are worth much more to the local people than the original. I have spent quite a bit of time in the last couple of weeks scanning part of one collection of Ramsgate postcards to produce a book see www.michaelsbookshop.com/harbourcards/ where these pictures are available for free. So if it’s a choice of no museum or no Sunbeam collection why not have your cake and eat it, scan it make it available in a form that local people can handle and even buy for themselves if the want and sell the originals to help finance the museum. I am very happy to give any help I can, here in Ramsgate with the people in the bookshop browsing through over 100 local history publications all day, for free unless they want to buy one you can always see this working in practice

Michael, your ideas are excellent. It really does proove that if Museums make full use of their own resources they would not have become totally grant dependant.

I was always amazed how Bleak House managed to stay in business before the owner packed it in due to ill health without any grant or finacial help. Part of the business plan was publication, and that worked.
